In the world of public transport, the Mercedes-Benz OM 457 HLA is considered one of the most reliable engines of recent decades. For workshops maintaining older bus fleets abroad, this engine is a highly sought-after spare part. At M\u00f6ller-Scholz Gbr, we are currently offering a fully functional unit from 2008, sourced from a Citaro LE intercity bus.<\/p>

Technical Features and Construction<\/h3>

The OM 457 HLA is a water-cooled inline six-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of nearly 12 liters (11,967 cm\u00b3). The defining characteristic is the abbreviation “HLA”: The “H” stands for the horizontal (lying) design. This flat construction was crucial for the success of low-floor technology. It allowed designers to install the engine space-efficiently in the rear without obstructing the passenger area with high steps or platforms.<\/p>

Technically, this engine relies on the proven Pump-Line-Nozzle system (PLD\/Unit-Pump). Unlike modern common-rail systems, mechanics worldwide value PLD technology for being robust and easy to maintain in the field. With an engine number like 457.965, this specific 2008 variant typically meets Euro 4 or Euro 5 emission standards\u2014often supported by BlueTec SCR technology.<\/p>

Application in the Mercedes-Benz Citaro<\/h3>

This specific engine served as the heart of the first and second Citaro generations (O 530). The Citaro LE (Low Entry) model combined easy access in the front section with the proven drive technology of a high-floor bus in the rear. In these configurations, the OM 457 HLA usually delivered power outputs between 220 kW (299 hp) and 260 kW (354 hp).<\/p>

Since these bus models are typically decommissioned in Germany after 10 to 15 years, they often begin their “second life” in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, or Africa. They are highly appreciated there for their solid construction. A used replacement engine like the OM 457.965 is often the only economical solution to get a Citaro back on the road after a major engine failure.<\/p>

Scope of Delivery and Condition<\/h3>

The spare part offered here comes fully equipped with all ancillary components. This significantly reduces installation time in the workshop. As the engine control unit (ECU) is available separately, mechanics can choose whether to continue using their existing electronics or upgrade to a complete system.<\/p>
